i have several shirts that are too big on me. i've been adding clothes to a pile of things that i wanted to rework into something. i love this pink floyd shirt and i hated that it was too big on me. so i took that t-shirt and 3 flannel shirts that don't fit right anymore and made something new. i meant to make a dress, but turns out they were all the same amount of too big so it turned out more like a tunic than a dress. i really like it though. i guess i could have added more panels of flannels on the bottom part to make it more of a dress, but i didn't think of that and it's very wearable like this. this was really easy to make. i just cut each flannel right where the armpit starts. i wanted to keep the pockets, because everything is better with pockets. i really hate how they're covering up the "floyd" though, so i guess i should have dropped the pockets, but still pockets are awesome. i have a serger and a regular sewing machine, so i used the serger to sew the flannel side seams together. then i pinned the flannel shirts to the t-shirt with right sides together, which i cut just below the "floyd". i didn't sew across the pockets. i turned it right side out and then topstitched where the pockets overlap. easy and it only took me about 20 minutes to do this!</div>

: one of Alex's costumes for Wizard World this year was Starlord from Guardians of the Galaxy. Stan Lee was scheduled to be at the event this year and this is one of his movies (he had to cancel due to pneumonia.) We didn't plan ahead very far this year since we weren't originally planning on attending, so i bought most of the costume. I did paint the blaster. I started with a toy that is complete with some lights and sound effects. My skills don't particularly lie in painting, but I'll get better with practice. I do like how this one turned out and it looked great with her costume.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-58031347331488731252018-02-12T12:29:00.001-08:002018-02-12T12:29:49.796-08:00market dress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

anyways, i'm trying to work on more projects again and sew more this year. i've been wanting to make this market/frock dress for quite some time. it's simplicity 1080. i made a couple small adjustments to the pattern. i really don't like dresses that tie in the back - they're a bit painful, am i right? so i changed that out for an elastic cincher. i also started off by making my fabric using fat quarters and patchworking it together. this was a quick, easy project to make and it has a lot of room for error for sizing which is usually my biggest challenge with sewing my own clothes. and because i didn't line up my patchwork perfectly in one spot i hand stitched on some cute trim to hide that misalignment.</div>

otherwise known as juggling sticks or flower sticks, but i've always called them devil sticks. i used to have a pair in college, but i don't recall what happened to them. i've been wanting to make some for a while now and finally did it. i made a set for alex and a set for myself. i followed instructions that i found on instructables. the one thing i would change is that i would have covered the juggling stick completely instead of that criss cross pattern. they said it wouldn't make a difference in how they perform, however they are a little slippery in between the innertube. i got some dowel rods and cut one long and two shorter sticks for each set. i got a couple of bicycle innertubes for wrapping and for the end tassles, electric tape and push pins. they were fun to make and relatively easy. they are going to take a lot of practice before i or alex can do any tricks - we are still trying to volley the juggling stick. but it's a fun outdoor activity that doesn't require a lot of room, they're easy to travel with, and you don't need anybody else in order to play. i particularly like how alex's pair (the green ones, of course) have some of the innertube print still on the tassles.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-84138198294324422202016-01-29T06:32:00.000-08:002016-01-29T06:32:05.585-08:00i sprouted!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

sprouts have long been a staple in john and my diets. i think i got hooked on them with my first earth day bagel from bagel and deli in oxford, ohio. yum yum yum. in the past few years they have disappeared from our grocery stores and sandwich shops and everywhere i've looked. i guess people aren't cleaning them and are subsequently getting sick. we've been missing sprouts and then about a week or so ago john said i wonder if we can make our own sprouts! it had never dawned on me that we could. and guess what? they're super easy. so i set out to research the best ways to do it and decided on this tray system. it came with some alfalfa seeds and i also bought a salad seed mix which consists of broccoli, radish, alfalfa and clover seeds. this tray system has three stacking trays so our first go i did two trays of alfalfa and one tray of the salad mix. i'm so excited. in less than a week we have a ton of sprouts ready to eat and they look delicious. i'm going to start new batches this weekend and keep experimenting with some different seeds and beans. they're healthy, delicious and easy - plus they go with everything!boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-86702433664859671652016-01-22T05:53:00.004-08:002016-01-22T05:53:39.960-08:00imperial beer<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

at our house we craft a lot of our holiday gifts. all 3 of us. this year john made two different kinds of home brew for gifts: an imperial blond ale and an imperial pale ale. they turned out rather tasty. and usually i make custom labels for his beers. as soon as i heard "imperial" of course i thought of stormtroopers and asked john if he minded if i geeked up the beer labels. my friend had already redrawn the troopers so i asked him if i could have those and i did the hand lettering throughout. i used the old school trooper for the blond ale and the force awakens trooper for the pale ale. i think they turned out super fun. and they make perfect gifts for this year since everyone is a star wars fan right now.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-5999446661805622362015-12-04T07:38:00.000-08:002015-12-04T07:38:02.981-08:00star wars diy gifts<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Alex has a great teacher this year (she has had great teachers every year thus far actually.) His favorite movie is Star Wars! and obviously, we just love Star Wars as well, so we made a few items to give to Alex's teacher as part of his holiday gift. you can't see it in the picture except for a corner of it, but I also designed and printed and sewed an R2D2 tea towel for him. I drew a cute little Chewbacca and had him printed and I sewed him into a bean bag doll - Alex likes to help me pour the bean bag pellets into the dolls when I make them. I also poured some concrete death stars. I glued on some little rubbery feet on the bottom and painted the bottom half silver. I think that will make a nice little desk adornment or paper weight. and finally, Alex and I made him a little Star Wars terrarium in a ball jar. we used little micro machine Obi Wan and Darth Vader characters for the scene. we do have a couple of other small items to add to the gift, but for a Star Wars fan I am hoping he will love this handmade gift set.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-80243087935758451652015-10-30T05:15:00.001-07:002015-10-30T06:42:18.409-07:00Princess Leia<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've been working since January or so to make Alex's Halloween costume. she decided a long, long time ago (probably the day after Halloween 2014) that she wanted to be Leia. I didn't really think thru the fact that it would be such a popular costume this year. but she doesn't seem to mind. in fact, she said hers would be better than everyone else's anyways because i made it. so anyways, here's how i made Alex's A New Hope movie accurate Leia costume. I started with the hat. I asked Alex if she wanted to wear a wig or a hat and she wanted nothing to do with a wig. so i set out to find a Leia buns hat pattern. I didn't really like anything I found so i pieced together a few different patterns and put my own twist on the buns to crochet her hat. I love the part in the hat - i had to redo that several times to get it right. And the hat is really warm and cozy - it basically has built in ear warmers. Then I started working on both the belt and the dress at the same time. The dress looks rather simple to make, but as it turns out it is way more complicated than you'd think. It's a double layered white jersey gown with the long hood - that's a lot of fabric. I basically made this dress twice since I made the pattern myself and made a few mistakes along the way. I researched and read a bunch of different tutorials and padawan guides for making adult sized Leia gowns. I took Alex's measurements and set out to make a pattern out of excess old fabric that I had on hand. I had to make adjustments to the pattern, but not too bad. I wish I had made the arms a little longer, but I am happy with the length since I didn't want her tripping over the gown. There's even the slit in the sides like in the movie. I don't have a lot of experience with this type of fabric and i hand stitched quite a bit of it (which I prefer to machine sewing anyways.) I made the hood pattern wrong the first time - math error! so i made that part a second time as well. and i had never made a keyhole opening in clothes before nor had I made a mandorin collar before. I made the collar wrong the first time as well, but re-measured; made a new pattern and made it again. So, yes, I made every single part of this gown twice! and before i hemmed the bottom of the dress I sewed an elastic waste into the gown. I know, that part is not movie specific, but this is an 8 year old and it would be way easier for her to wear with that waste line sewn in. And finally I hand stitched the hem of the dress. I am so happy with how it turned out. It did not dawn on me until I finished that she would be wearing this at school at most likely get chocolate frosting or cupcake or something on this gown. I sprayed the entire thing with scotch guard - recommended by a friend of mine (thanks for the fabulous idea, Alison.) We'll see how well that works, but I figure if it doesn't then she'll just be post trash compactor Leia then. Finally the belt. I made the fabric part of the belt out of faux leather - I kind of wish I had gone with real leather just for the sturdiness and thickness of it. the faux leather was kind of a problem. the first time i tried putting snaps onto the belt for fasteners they ripped right thru the fabric. so yes, I also made the belt twice! This time i used snap fabric strips that I sewed onto the faux leather as the fasteners and those seem to be working beautifully. the plates on the belt: I cut them out of aluminum sheeting; filed down each one; and punched a hole in the middle. I then attached those to the belts with an eyelit brad (or whatever you call those things) using a resin button that I had made as a washer. They still were rotating and spinning so I did add some glue (e6000) to the backside of the metal plates. I bent the plates to curve around her waste for betting fitting. Finally i finished off the belt by glueing silver button covers over the hole of the plates. Oh, the blaster. I bought one of those cheap toy blasters that are white and orange; spray painted silver first; then spray painted black; sanded some areas for wear and tear so the silver would show thru; and sealed it with a matte coat. I made the blaster strictly for pictures; she will not be leaving the house with it. She loves the costume and might even wear it (if it survives the weekend) when we go to see The Force Awakens in December. Happy Halloween.<br />

Alex and I started some paint by number projects earlier this year. I found her some downloadable beginner print by number pieces. They're super cute and still in progress; I will definitely show those pictures soon. I got myself some advanced versions of the downloadables that go with Alex's sets. I also set out to find some geeky ones for long term projects for myself. I was looking to find some Doctor Who, but I didn't really find any that I liked yet. I might draw my own and print some on canvas paper. I did however find some awesome Star Wars paint by number. I found this old kit (circa 70s i believe) in its original packaging and sealed on eBay cheap. the paints are all dried up so I'm just using them as reference. I've been painting bits on this after Alex and I do a color on our smaller paint projects. I think this one might take me until I'm 90 to finish, but so far i'm loving it.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-51207958645972577142015-09-18T05:00:00.002-07:002015-09-18T05:00:55.817-07:00sugar skull mask<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

this year i was asked to participate in the sugar skull mask show at work. i was so excited. i believe this was the second year the hispanic resource network group put together this show. they have a limited budget, therefore limited masks; so they ask a select number of artists from different departments around the company. i had a couple of ideas immediately, but went with a more traditional look for the sugar skull. i love sugar skulls by the way. i started by cutting off the jaws of the mask (i forgot to take a picture before i cut them off and put down a base white coat front and back.) i painted my design on the skull next and drilled holes at the forehead for the flowers to be added later. at the same time i started making little red and pink resin cast skulls that i put as the center of the roses (you can't really see them in the final piece because of the rose petals, but i still love how the resin skulls turned out.) next i started gluing on all those tiny little gems over my painted designs. originally i was going to cover the entire white part as well in gems, but i stopped because i liked the look with just the colored gems. and finally i glued the rose headdress into place. the show turned out great - we have some incredibly talented people here at work. happy (early) day of the dead (dia de los muertos.)</div>

i haven't posted anything in a while - i'm either working on gifts, longer term projects, or just outside enjoying the nice summer weather. so i thought i'd give a sneak peak into our halloween. can you guess what alex decided to dress up as? yes, she's going to be princess leia for halloween this year. i still have quite a bit of work to do on the costume - the gown and belt will be movie accurate (but child sized and one other detail that you won't even see but makes it easier to wear.) so here we have the hair. alex has short (well, currently short) blonde hair. she did not want to wear a wig whatsoever. so i crocheted her a hat. it will actually work perfectly since halloween here can be so cold and part of the costume struggle is always how to keep her warm enough. i like the part in the middle of the forehead, which was a little difficult to get right - i think i redid that a couple of times. and i just love the buns. i basically crocheted a tube then stitched that into a spiral. i did want the buns to be bigger so i then stuffed the buns and stitched a circle of felt to close them. i attached the buns right over the ear area which also creates some ear muffs to keep her another level of warm. she says the hat is really comfortable and she can't wait to dress up as leia. now if i can only finish the rest of the costume in time :)boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-31634658805435451872015-06-12T04:13:00.001-07:002015-06-12T04:13:04.369-07:00rose pin<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i crocheted a rose and turned it into a pin. this will be a piece for one of alex's cosplay outfits for next year's wizards world comicon. i have 3 outfits planned for alex and me: a different theme for each day of the con. one of the days will of course be doctor who. we will match as far as general theme, but we will be cosplaying from different doctors i think. for this upcoming halloween, alex had her choices narrowed down to 3 ideas (she has since chosen.) one of the ideas was rose tyler from the idiot's lantern. that is such a niche idea (and i love it) however there probably wouldn't be a single person at school or on her trick-or-treating route that would know who she was supposed to be. so instead that will be one of her cosplays. in the episode rose tyler is wearing a pink dress with a jacket. on the jacket is a little pink flower pin. so here is that little detail of the outfit. i found an easy crochet flower pattern on pinterest. it was literally two rows of crochet and then sew it in a spiral with the yarn tail. super easy (although i did follow the directions incorrectly the first go around, but that's typical for me, haha.) then i simply glued a pin to the back. it'll be perfect for the outfit. next i need to make a mask that looks like her face has been sucked off into a television set :)boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-16654678598425422015-05-29T06:12:00.001-07:002015-05-29T06:12:26.008-07:00bald gene simmons cat toy<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

haha, so this happened. i set out to make a baby gift for an expecing girlfriend. i thought it would be cute to make her a gene simmons doll from KISS. i had a plan and started crocheting...and this is what happened, haha. it does not even look like i had in my brain. i cannot give this as a gift - way too embarrassing if the receiver has to struggle to figure out what it is. i originally planned to give him some black yarn hair as well, but i decided to not bother. since i wasn't going to gift this anymore, alex asked if she could have it. but then we discovered that the cat seemed to fancy bald gene simmons. so voila, now it's a cat toy :)boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-10031743001655460832015-05-22T05:27:00.001-07:002015-05-22T05:27:34.268-07:00feeling squatchy?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

my nephew just had a birthday and he is often looking for sasquatch. so we put together a sasquatch themed birthday present for him. it included an awesome bigfoot metal lunchbox, a bigfoot gentlemen bendy doll, bigfoot bandaids, and this plush ragdoll that i made. you can make one too: http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/3907165. i made this one out of faux suede which gives it a soft feel and it washes wonderfully. his shirt says "don't stop believin'" haha and there's a bigfoot silhouette on the back of his shirt. he does have big feet and big ears and a funny little tushie. his arms and legs are pretty long making him even sillier. i am working on making a yeti version as well: http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/3985196.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-86295935151259512672015-05-15T04:57:00.000-07:002015-05-15T04:57:55.677-07:00art deco table numbers<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

here's another piece of my in-laws wedding that i created. the look of the wedding was art deco inspired. on natural colored tags i hand lettered the table numbers with my micron pens. i used my light table to help me line up each tag so they came out similar and the numbers were relatively centered. and then each card got a unique art deco inspired doodle frame. i really enjoyed making these and love how they turned out. they were then hung on colored mason jars filled with big flowers (i don't know what any flower types are named, but they were pretty) along with pom pom flowers that sarah created.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-10308504979046970312015-05-01T05:32:00.001-07:002015-05-01T05:32:42.674-07:00the wedding book<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

it's been a year and a half now since my brother-in-law and now sister-in-law got married and i still haven't gotten around to posting about all the different details and designs from the wedding. i probably never will show it all - partly because i didn't think to take pictures of everything. the wedding was an art deco styled peacock-colored theme/design with hand lettering on everything. my process for all the hand lettering went from sketchbook to pen on tracing paper to computer and then print. when all was said and done i took all the tracing paper original pen designs and bound them in a book. i placed the cardstock that was used to print each page throughout the book separating the tracing papers. for the fabric cover: i drew a design by hand; redrew it on the computer; colored it; then had it printed on a linen-cotton blend fabric. i used thin board to build the book cover gluing the fabric to sectioned pieces. i lined up all the tracing paper designs (including every single original design from the wedding: the save the dates, invites, response cards, directions, soap labels - everything) with the cardstock paper and used c clamps and flower press boards to hold them together. i added thin layers of pvc glue along the one edge of all the papers - lots of layers over a lot of time to build up that binding. i then added those little fabric tape end pieces (i can't remember what they call those in the bookbinding world, but they look really nice.) and finally attached the book cover. i was proud of how it turned out and i've always wanted to try my hand at bookbinding. it's a fragile book (the pages could easily rip out like a notebook) but i thought it was a really nice gift to commemorate their wedding.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-60498701820456109422015-04-17T05:37:00.002-07:002015-04-17T05:37:42.700-07:00monsters hockey print<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

tonight is the last home game of the season for the lake erie monsters. at a game earlier in the season the spokeswoman or commentator (not sure what her title would be) had on a wide neck sweatshirt with an all black monsters logo print on it. i really liked it and looked in the team shop for it and online but it must have been an older style that they didn't carry anymore. so i decided to make my own. bella has a line of sweatshirts that are soft and a wider neck than normal - they're not wide enough to go fully eighties but i like them. i got alex and i these grey with black sleeve ones - they don't have them in youth but i get her a small and it works (she's practically swimming in it but whatever.) i found a logo online and made a screen for it and printed us our own apparel. i made john one on a long sleeve grey shirt. i will still support the team shop but i wanted this particular look and couldn't find it there so this time i crafted my own. go monsters, great season.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-15615092545566635172015-04-10T06:10:00.001-07:002015-04-10T06:10:23.749-07:00beaded harlequin cuff bracelet<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i don't often bead anymore - either a cat is attacking the thread or for years a toddler made it difficult and then there's the time it takes along with all the other projects in process. well it's been years since there was a toddler trying to "help" but it's still hard to find the time. but here's a fun bracelet that i managed to complete. i started this project years ago when planning alex's carnival birthday party. my original plan was to make a little clutch purse - haha, obviously that didn't happen. i made my own peyote stitch graphing paper and created this harlequin pattern. i have a pair of harlequin tights that were somewhat of my inspiration. these are all the seed bead size delico beads. they're really nice to work with and all so even in size. i stitched this using a peyote stitch. well, the birthday party came and went and i only really finished about an inch of the intended purse. so i decided to turn it into a bracelet. i finished off the weaving of the beads and then added a crimp clasp eye on both ends and added a hook. and called it done. i recently started a new beading project of a tubular peyote stitch - hopefully to become a long flapper style or lariat necklace. i was aiming to get it done by a certain time but it is slow moving so i don't think i will finish in time for the event i had in mind, but i will continue and maybe in 5 years i'll have a finished necklace, hahaha.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-40619790515635738122015-04-02T04:55:00.003-07:002015-04-02T04:55:50.341-07:00adipose softies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

doctor who is full of so many fantastic characters and monsters and wonderful things. one of my favorite episodes is "Partners in Crime" with the baby fat, adipose. this is also the episode where the doctor (david tennant, 10th) reunites back up donna noble (catherine tate - one of my fave companions.) and the adipose are so darn cute. yes they are baby fat that pops right out of the people taking the weight loss drug from adipose industries, "where the fat just walks away". haha. alex and i each wanted our own stuffed adipose dolls. so i found a basic pattern on pinterest and made a few changes. i forgot to add a seam allowance to the arms and legs so those could have been chunkier and easier to turn and stuff. alex didn't want them to have toes and fingers, which is just fine with me and i didn't give them a baby tooth. i used safety eyes and embroidery floss for the face and some leftover white felt that i had on hand. i thought about stuffing them with those plastic bean bag pellets, but i stuck with regular fluff stuffing. they're so cute. they are currently hanging out on our shelves with the 11th's screwdriver and the faux balloon dog, but i'm sure they will watch new episodes with us when season nine returns. *waving at fat.</div>

yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the reboot of Doctor Who - the day when we met the 9th doctor (he's great) and rose tyler (also great.) alex and i each celebrated the anniversary in small ways. i think the 9th doctor is great, btw; people seem to skip over him for some reason, but he was fantastic! the first picture is a screenprint i made on sweatshirts for both alex and i (sorry i don't have a better picture of our sweatshirts.) we first splatter painted with some glow-in-the-dark fabric paint. then i screenprinted a fun quote from the 9th doctor to rose, "did i mention it also travels in time." alex wore her sweatshirt yesterday - i would have, but i already got a spot on mine so it isn't work worthy anymore. i did however wear my tardis arm warmers and my adipose shirt to abs class; "the fat just walks away." the other picture is my bitmap who bag. spoonflower has been testing out patterns: you pick a bag or a shirt pattern then a design and they send you fabric with the cut and sew shirt or bag with instructions ready to go. i was in the test group. i made a shirt (which i still have yet to take a picture) and this bag. i used the faux suede fabric and it was so easy to sew together and it's a great size. i wish i could have scaled the graphics down in size to work with the pattern better, but the whole cut and sew bag thing is still in development. oh, i also used my sonic screwdriver pen all day :)boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-22742855579272307692015-03-06T04:52:00.003-08:002015-03-06T04:52:59.540-08:00star wars perler bow<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

alex made me a gift :) she did make herself one too. i love the 8 bit look of these perler beads - which if you don't know what perler beads are; they are these little plastic tube beads that you place out on a peg board and then iron/melt until they stick together. so alex made us each an r2d2 bow. they're so cute, i want a tardis one as well (we'll see if i get that; she switches up what crafts she's into constantly.) so after alex made these bows and i ironed them i turned them into hair pieces. i glued alex's to an elastic headband (one with thin elastic and a circle felt piece) and i glued mine onto a barrette clip. i love it - and it'll be perfect for may 4th.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-66018592985356217152015-02-27T05:06:00.002-08:002015-02-27T05:06:26.589-08:00cat cave<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i crocheted blizz (blizzard) a cat cave! i found a free pattern thru pinterest - i think it led me to ravelry, but not sure. i made the cave out of recycled t-shirt yarn that i bought on etsy - which is why it's every color you can imagine, but hey blizz doesn't care about that. i didn't weave in any of my loose ends either. i just made sure they were all on the inside and i tied a knot at the end of each strand; i figured blizz would enjoy playing with the strings and he does. he loved it so much he was trying to lay in it as i was actively crocheting it. after a few weeks of having it, he's hit or miss with it. he still uses it, but not all the time. and in the last picture you can see that lonnie is a little jealous that he doesn't have a giant dog cave to crawl into and sleep all day.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-66884689676570550442015-02-13T05:24:00.001-08:002015-02-13T05:24:23.224-08:00Valentine's Mail Box<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

it's valentine's day! almost. and alex had to make a valentine's box for school. so i made the basic structure of it for her and then she decorated it (i didn't get a picture after she decorated for some reason, but she covered it in stickers: hearts and hello kitty galore. oh and her name in letter stickers.) i started with a basic shoe box. in the lid part i cut 3 the top and the sides of the mail slot, leaving the bottom of slot uncut. i cut out a little notch in the top of the mail slot so she could open it. then i cut with some scrap cardboard a section for the inside of the slot to stop it from opening at a certain distance. it's basically a strip of cardboard about 2 or 3 inches wide and folded for 3 sides (you can see the two inside sides in the bottom picture - the side you can't see is just the back strip.) and i cut the ends at a slight angle. i taped this cardboard strip to the inside of the mail slot and tested it. then i covered the entire lid and bottom of the shoe box with hot pink duct tape. alex wanted a working mail flag so i cut out a flag with the scrap cardboard and covered that in hello kitty duct tape. then i just riveted the flag to the side of the box. it was kind of fun to make, even though the duct tape was a little tedious to do, especially around the mail slot. alex loved it and enjoyed decorating it and says that many of her friends liked hers best. now to fill it with valentines and treats.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-30678993186954195502015-02-06T06:43:00.001-08:002015-02-06T06:43:27.628-08:00new nephew gift set #2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

a couple weeks ago i showed you a very hungry caterpillar sleep sack and cap that i made for my new nephew: <a href="http://boogiebeans.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-nephew-gift-1-very-hungry.html">http://boogiebeans.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-nephew-gift-1-very-hungry.html</a> and here's the set i gave when he was actually born. i hand lettering and screenprinted 3 onesies for him. we're in ohio hence the locally grown design: i think that's my favorite one. although i thought i was pretty funny making the "full of shits and giggles" - haha get it? babies are full of shits and giggles :) and then there's the "i wake up awesome" which is just fun (it could have printed better; the fine lines didn't work great, but i still like the design.) and i made him another crocheted cap - this one is sized for a one year old though so he can get to it when he's bigger. i thought it was a fun hat, but let me tell you before you venture into making one that those fringe are a pain in the ass. they aren't hard to do, but they took forfreakingever. i seriously almost gave up several times because i just did not enjoy making the mohawk part. but i did it, it's cute, and i added one of those awesome "this took forever" labels on the inside. i love those labels (got them on etsy) and i am going to be adding them to almost everything from now on :)boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5835501379778600371.post-5445736244992375072015-01-23T05:49:00.003-08:002015-01-23T05:49:45.576-08:00bowling party goody bags<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

this year alex had a bowling party with her girlfriends for her birthday. they had a great time. here are the goody bags i put together for the girls. since there weren't going to be any boys invited, we went with a full on pink and black retro look. (i never took a picture of the invites, hmmm - i'll have to check to see if i still have any.) i designed the bags; created a pink gingham background and drew some bowling pins and pink bowling ball designs. had them printed on cotton fabric. sewed them up and added pink twine drawstrings. i also put the fabric up for sale on spoonflower so you can make your own pink bowling goody bags at <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/3321750">http://www.spoonflower.com/designs/3321750</a>. then i filled them with fun bowling themed goodies. i found these little bowling pin pens; a mini bowling set; bowling themed temporary tattoos; and i bought bowling ball cake pops on etsy. the girls all seemed to love them.boogie beanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11827270462990643769noreply@blogger.com0
